We can say that I did not choose Sweden, but Sweden chose me. I had a goal to study abroad, I wanted to get a master’s degree in another country. Applied to various programs in many countries: Sweden, Germany, USA, Denmark, Canada.
As a result, it turned out that it was in Sweden that I received a scholarship. I was here a year before enrollment. Sweden seemed to me a country of the future.
I was struck by the fact that there is waste processing, recycling.
, which we did not have, that the flush in the toilet can be full, or maybe half as much, and that escalators do not go when there are no people on them. And excellent potable tap water. I thought: why not Sweden?
Before that, I studied economics, and I wanted to find something more creative in the same area. I applied for marketing programs – among them was the program at the School of Business at Stockholm University.
, I realized how important it is to follow a checklist: a list of requested documents. When I first applied, I was disqualified already during the consideration of the application, because I submitted not a copy of the original diploma, but only a translation. For this reason, I missed a whole year. The second time, of course, I was already more attentive and did everything right.
The principle of a checklist – you need to submit strictly those documents that are on the list, without missing anything. Maybe you should even send something extra: for example, certificates of additional courses, participation in a scientific conference, internship.
In addition, I had to write a bunch of motivation letters: for each university you enter, as well as separately for an application for a scholarship. This is a special genre.
… In a motivation letter, the main thing is to be able to explain why you are worthy of the scholarship. I insisted that at that time there were few marketing specialists with a European education in my country. And he wrote that he would like to study in Sweden in a specialization that we did not have. Writing a good motivation letter is also a kind of marketing, you need to sell yourself.
It is important to understand that, besides you, there are maybe ten or twenty applicants for your scholarship.
I remember the moment when I learned that I had received a scholarship. I just opened the site of the Swedish Institute.
, saw his name on the list – and started jumping and dancing with joy. It was one of the most significant events in my life – which, I think, changed me.
And then the search for housing began – a sore subject, especially in Stockholm. I advise you to start looking early. Stockholm University, unfortunately, does not provide housing for students. It was very difficult. When it came time to go to Sweden, I never had a roof over my head.
First I asked to stay with my friends for a week. And when I flew on a plane from Kiev to Stockholm, I met a couple who was sitting next to me. They lived in Stockholm, I asked for help.
And they gave me the contact of a friend’s daughter, with whom I was able to stay for a month.
